Our Story

Founded in 2005 by three individuals who had the vision of changing the lives of children in the Stellenbosch district through music education, Jamestown Sounds started in the community of Jamestown – a beautiful village situated on the outskirts of Stellenbosch.

Until 2005, one school in Jamestown – Weber Gedenk Primary – had been without a music teacher for almost 10 years. Understanding the value of music education in children’s development, the headmaster of Weber Gedenk expressed to the founders the urgent need for musical activity and tuition at his school. Soon thereafter, the high school in the Jamestown – Stellenzicht Secondary School – also came on board.

From the classroom

The project’s catalysts of change – our teachers – are primarily senior music major students and music graduates from Stellenbosch University. One of the criteria of teacher appointments at Jamestown Sounds is excellence in teaching music across a range of contexts, having a drive for social change and genuinely having the students' needs at heart.
